I LOVE love love sketching with charcoal… and pastel…
My obsession with thick black glasses and the creative people who wore them began my series of pastel drawings on very large pieces of paper. Of course I ended up getting a pair myself! All these drawings were done on the floor of my studio which gave them a slightly ‘off-skew’ imperfection… which I love!
The first drawing I did in this series of Elvis Costello wearing thick black glasses. I love his music…
A cheeky drawing using pastel of a friend of a friend. Of course my friend now has the drawing!
A pastel drawing of another musician who wore thick black glasses. One of my fave singers from the nineties.
Pastel drawing of thick black glasses wearing Tim Burton. Love his weird films!
I love drawing faces, especially interesting faces and distorting them makes them even more interesting!
This is one of my favourite drawings that I did while studying drawing at National Art School. I love the use of distortion and and this one some features were drawn bigger giving them more emphasis.
Again this pencil drawing was done in college using a grid system to add distortion. Its a drawing of an image of Chuck Close, an American artist who uses a grid system to do his own paintings. Love how grotesque it looks!
A drawing in pastel using a grid to distort the face. Most of the face is in black except for one eye which I did in colour using the square of the grid.
A drawing in pastel amplifying the fustration and anger that the man is feeling.
A drawing I did of a portrait by Van Gogh called ‘Portrait of Joseph Michel. LOVE Van Gogh!
A drawing in charcoal I did at college. Loved the eery strangeness of this model so wanted to capture just that…
My fascination with interesting faces started way back and now I’m ready to do a series on them… more to come x
When I travelled overseas in my 20’s I brought back some postcards with weathered old Scottish faces on them. It started my fascination with interesting faces. This is a drawing of my favourite one which I didn’t do until many years later. Charcoal and pastel on paper.
I love life drawing! While studying drawing at National Art School, we did a lot of it and it was there that I also found my love of charcoal. I continued this passion through later years by joining life drawing groups.
Love the feeling that this drawing portrays. It was always one of my favourites. Charcoal on paper.
A charcoal sketch done at a session with a life drawing group. I was fascinated by the shapes and angles that this pose created.
A clothed model is actually much more interesting to draw, especially when they already have a strong sense of character. Loved that this model turned up dressed in black with thick black glasses! And the shapes and angles that this pose created were a bonus.
One of my favourite models to draw! Amazing poses, props and a very interesting face.
A pastel drawing done in college - emphasis was on the sphere rather than the face.
